Strategic Development

Case Study A fresh approach was needed to the development of skills amongst first line managers. This included a strong desire to evaluate the difference that skills training was making to day to day performance

The need
To create, deliver and evaluate a new management skills programme for first line managers across the UK which would:

  • Increase the speed of learning
  • Make us of a large range of e-learning materials
  • Not require managers to be away from the business for days on end
  • Transfer the learning into new workplace behaviours

What we did
We designed a five module management skills kit which encompassed self managed learning, One day interactive workshops and experiential learning through specific workplace responsibilities.

The programme was built around the organisation's competency framework and recently re-launched values and was therefore embedded into the fabric of the organisation. On-line guides for attendees and their managers were produced along with documents to track performance improvement. These became part of the organisation's appraisal process.

What we achieved
The overarching theme was 'making a difference to the business'.

A new blended learning programme run through HR and focused on the processes and needs of operational areas across the UK was designed and delivered. 70% of all learning could be organised around day to day work priorities and the programme was completable over a six month period.

A clear measurement system to track progress was embedded into the performance review of attending managers
