Case Study

The Royal Mail made a public undertaking to create a range of improvements to bring about a return to profit. Amongst these was the restructure of their senior HR team so as to create a new people function known as People & Organisation Development to be designed around a new strategic model of Business Partner, Experts, Shared Services with the aim of providing an improved level of support to its 200,000 plus employees.

The need
To work with the Directors within the function to select the best internal or external candidates for the 80 or so senior management roles within the new People & Organisational Development structure. The key success criteria were:? Quality? Speed? Cost

What we did
We became an integral part of the project team and as the need arose we provided leadership for strands of the project. The team comprised senior HR personnel, psychologists and transactional managers. We under took a project to assess and select in the region of 1,000 candidates in a period of three months from initial briefing through to the appointment of 80 plus roles. This involved CV and application screening for all candidates, selecting those to be interviewed for positions - we completed a structured interview for around 500 people.

 

We produced individual Selection Reports against our client’s competency framework along with our recommendation for short lists of candidates for final interview. Finally, we supported the ‘wash-up’ and final decision making process of the HR Directors and the feedback process for candidates.

What we achieved
The creation of the strategic management team of People & Organisational Development within the timescale set, to the quality agreed and to a budget that represented a significant financial saving to our client. The completion of this project in three months represents a model case study for organisational change on a large scale.
